Reid Park Zoo Mourns Phil the Vulture
This week Reid Park Zoo said goodbye to Phil, a male king vulture. He had a distinctive personality, always delighting guests with his energy and curiosity, and was a remarkable ambassador for his species. Phil developed strong bonds with the animal care team. He will be missed by the entire Reid Park Zoo staff, and by everyone who worked with him in particular.
Phil was a geriatric vulture, estimated to be at least 47 years of age. Median life expectancy for this species is 28.7 years.
Phil had always been a healthy vulture, receiving excellent reports from his regular veterinary check-ups. When he suddenly started exhibiting signs of medical distress, our veterinary team immediately stepped in to provide supportive care but he passed away shortly after. A full necropsy will be performed to gather more information.
