Wednesday, August 2, 2017 — Wednesday, August 30, 2017
Reid Park Zoo is taking a bite out of summer with Watermelon Wednesdays, beginning at 8 a.m. every Wednesday in August.
On Wednesdays, the animals are receiving watermelon enrichment. Enrichment is provided to animals to provide mental and physical stimulation in their daily lives. Without a doubt, Watermelon Wednesdays provide a fun and unique experience for the Zoo animals – and YOU! Zoo Members may enjoy watermelon eegee’s at 30% off at the Cafe.
Providing enrichment offers our animals opportunities to display a wide array of natural behaviors. The animal care staff makes feeding time challenging and fun for the animals. A variety of task-oriented puzzle feeders and different methods of presentation encourage animals to think and work for their food. Watermelon also provides sensory enrichment, stimulating olfactory (smell), auditory (hearing), taste and tactile (touch) responses. While watermelon may not be naturally found in an animal’s environment, it stimulates various behaviors and … it is so fun to watch!
The best time to view the animals is when they are most active, in the mornings. Reid Park Zoo opens at 8 a.m.
Schedule for August 2nd:
