Otters Berani and Little Frei Stepping Out

Posted

These were Berani and Little Frei’s first steps out into their new home! We are very excited to have two Asian small-clawed otters at Reid Park Zoo. You can spot the two of them as they get settled in in the pool across from the lion and meerkat habitats.

Berani (male, age 3) and Little Frei (female, age 7) are ambassadors of their wild counterparts that naturally live in the wetlands, mangroves, rocky streams, and coastal areas of southern Asia. Asian small-clawed otters are assessed by the IUCN Red List as vulnerable due to habitat destruction, depletion of food sources, and wildlife trafficking.

One of the ways you can protect these otter-ly wonderful species is by shopping for sustainable seafood. You can learn more about businesses that are putting the environment first by checking out the Seafood Watch guide, managed by the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
