City Nature Challenge in Pima County
Join Reid Park Zoo staff on April 28th from 11 am to 12 pm as we participate in the City Nature Challenge!
The City Nature Challenge is an annual event where community members around the world find and document as much wildlife as they can in their cities. We will join in the fun (and science) by uploading pictures of any local wildlife we find at the Zoo – rabbits, lizards, and butterflies – oh my! You can team up with Education Staff roaming the Zoo or make your own observations during your Zoo visit. All observations will be documented in the iNaturalist app. If you explore Reid Park before or after the zoo, don’t forget to upload those observations to iNaturalist too!
Last year, over 300 community members in Pima County shared over 4,000 plant and animal observations that were identified as nearly 900 species. Let’s see if we can do even more this year!
There are two parts to the City Nature Challenge. From April 26th to April 29th, upload as many observations of wild animals and plants to iNaturalist as you can from any location in Pima County. From April 30th to May 5th, the observations posted to iNaturalist will be identified to species by community members.

Education Staff will be at the pollinator garden between 11 am and 12 pm to help participants learn more and get started.
City Nature Challenge Tips:
- Items to bring (if you have them): binoculars, cameras, field guides, and your smartphone to document the data
- Learn more about iNaturalist
- Download the app in advance and practice using it (staff will also be available the day of the event to assist you)
