Meet the unstoppable force that’s working to save all five rhino species
Reid Park Zoo’s Conservation Partners and programs work to protect wild animals and wild places around the world. The Zoo’s Director of Conservation and Education, Erin Gleeson, sat down with Caroline Harrison from the International Rhino Foundation to talk more about their work protecting rhinos.
There are five species of rhinos world-wide: Javan, Sumatran, Greater One-horned, Black, and White. Our Zoo is home to two southern white rhinos, Fireball and Yebonga. Yebonga recently celebrated her 53 birthday in April, and is the oldest rhino in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Male rhino, Fireball, is comparatively younger at 23 years old. The median life expectancy for southern white rhinos in human care is 36.1 years old.
We are proud to be on “Team Rhino” and support IRF’s work in protecting habitats, saving rhinos through anti-poaching, and engaging people throughout rhino habitats in Africa and Asia.
