Grevy’s zebra, Tambi (pronounced tahm-bee), celebrated her first birthday on July 8 on Watermelon Wednesday! At one-year-old Tambi is almost as tall as her mother, Anna, and weighs 592 pounds.
Recently Tambi has been learning with her Zoo Keepers different behaviors to allow her to participate in her own health care, like lining up to receive routine vaccines and scale training. During these training sessions she receives some of her favorite produce, sweet potatoes and carrots, as positive reinforcement.
Her care team has worked really hard (and put in extra hours) to help Tambi become a resilient zebra. We’re especially grateful to everyone at Lloyd Construction for incorporating well-being practices into their work day. This mindfulness of Tambi has allowed her to grow into the confident zebra she is today.
Reid Park Zoo’s zebra herd is part of the Grevy’s Zebra Species Survival Plan, which works to support healthy populations of zebras within Zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
