This holiday was created to honor pigeons that have used their navigation skills to aid humans throughout history. Scientists are still trying to fully understand how pigeons are so talented at navigating, but they think it is a combination of their great sense of smell, sight, magnetism, and memory. There are over 300 species of pigeons, and Reid Park Zoo is home to several! Both Bruce’s green pigeons and Nicobar pigeons live in our Flight Connection aviary.
