Spotlight on Baird’s Tapirs
Today we’re Bringing the Zoo to You with a special look at our Baird’s tapirs!
Did you know that we have two tapirs that call Reid Park Zoo home? Contessa and Tupi help with tapir education, conservation, and research! They are ambassadors for their species that teach Zoo guests about tapirs while also helping us raise funds for conservation programs like the Baird’s Tapir Project. Tupi and Contessa have had multiple calves which have helped researchers understand the different growth milestones tapirs experience within their first few years of life. Pictures and observation notes on our tapirs have also helped researchers further their understanding of tapirs.
