Penzi Loves Lettuce & Ear Scratches
It’s hard to believe Penzi is already three months old! Over the last month, her balance has improved, she’s slowing starting to approach the herd’s mud wallows, and she’s discovered a favorite food: lettuce! While she has started eating a little bit, Penzi’s main source of nutrition is still nursing.
Penzi has also shown an interest in working with her care team and has started early steps in training. Reid Park Zoo uses positive reinforcement training to conduct daily health checks on the herd and participation is voluntary — the animals can choose to walk away from a session at any time. The older members of the herd get snacks for participating, but Penzi isn’t eating much yet. Instead, she is rewarded with scratches on bottom of her feet and behind the ears!
