A New Herd Has Moved In!
On Monday, March 26, Reid Park Zoo became home to seven new residents, three female and four male, four-month-old Nigerian dwarf goats.
The Nigerian dwarf is a miniature goat from West Africa. It has been domesticated as a dairy goat and can be found throughout the world. Four Boer goats and an Oberhasli goat will join the Nigerian dwarf goats later this month.
Zoo guests will soon be able to learn how the animal care staff provide outstanding hands-on care and training for the goats through an interactive experience. During this animal encounter, guest will be able to touch and brush the goats while animal care staff educate them about these friendly animals.
“The new goats are already a crowd favorite,” said Dr. Sue Tygielski, interim Zoo Administrator. “They are young and energetic, with even more goats set to arrive later this month the habitat will be full of activity!”
The herd can be seen romping around in the goat habitat between the Event Gardens and rhino habitat during regular Zoo hours.
