We recently got some big news during Gwen’s annual wellness check.
Reid Park Zoo is delighted to have a new CT scanner which is providing the Zoo’s expert veterinary team an even closer look at the animals in our care and their health. Recently, our team brought Gwen, the two-toed sloth, in for a routine wellness check, including a CT scan. The scan revealed that Gwen, who was thought to be a male upon arriving at the Zoo, is actually a female. Sloths are a monomorphic species where there isn’t a difference between male and female appearance. With the aid of this new CT scanner, the animal care team will be able to continue to provide optimal care to Gwen and the other animals at the Zoo.
Today is Gwen’s 7th birthday, and she will be celebrating with some of her favorite snacks: edamame, garbanzo beans, and avocado. On your next stroll through the South American loop, be sure to stop by and wish her a happy birthday.
