Join the fun at Reid Park Zoo Summer Safari Friday Nights presented by Tucson Medical Center starting May 23rd.  Enjoy the Zoo and cooler evening temperatures at a series of themed nights featuring different Zoo Keeper chats, animal encounters, artifact stations, enrichment making activities, crafts, and scavenger hunts. You can eat dinner or a snack at our Zoofari Market, visit our Gift Shop and receive 10% off your purchase (15% for Zoo Members), listen to live music (dates noted below), visit vendor booths, ride the train and cool off in Kenya Get Wet.  Nightly photography tip.  Adults can even enjoy a cold beer – IDs required. See the schedule below for each night’s theme and activities.

*During evening events, animals are given access to their night houses for their comfort.  As a result, some animals may not choose to be on exhibit..

No refunds for unused tickets or passes.  Tickets have no resale value.  All tickets have a barcode that admit one person.  Option to purchase tickets will be removed at 3:30pm on each event date – you may purchase at the gate for that night.

July 11th:  Amazing Africa – Final Night of Summer Safari

Featuring our African animals – otter, giraffe, elephants, lions lemurs, zebras, rhino, gazelles & more.  Feed the giraffes.  Otter training demonstration.  Keeper chats at zebra, giraffe, otter, lion and rhino.   Music by the Barry James Orchestra, “instrumental music with an edge”.  Zoofari Cafe’s Special: South African sweet and spicy ribs, sweet potato fries and cool pasta salad: $7.95

May 23rd:  Opening Night – Bears, Bears, Bears
Featuring our grizzly, Andean and sun bears.  Military Appreciation Night – Military personnel free with paid child admission (must show military ID).  Photography Tip:  Wildlife with Bridget Stephenson.  Music by Robert Murillo playing a mix of bluegrass, rock, country and oldies. The Palm Oil Awareness Group from U of A will be hosting a booth on.raising awareness about palm oil conflict and its environmental and humanitarian implications in order to promote sustainable consumer choices.  Arizona Game & Fish will be doing a presentation on human-bear interactions with a case history drawn from Sierra Vista post-Monument Fire.  Pima Air & Space Museum will have crafts for children and the Sheriff’s Department will be out with a patrol car, safety program and activities for kids.

May 30th:  Primate Night
Featuring the lemurs, gibbons & macaques.  Teacher Appreciation Night – $2 off admission for teachers (must show teacher ID).  Photography Tip:  Landscapes by Nicci Radhe.  Paint beads with Ben’s Bells in honor of Be Kind to Animal’s Month.  Special presentation “Primates at Reid Park Zoo and in the Wild” by University of Arizona Primate Studies Field School, Rwanda in conjunction with U of A Palm Oil Awareness Initiative and U of A Lab for Evolutionary Endocrinology of Primates.  Clear Channel Radio will be out with streaming music.  Zoofari Market Special:  Grilled ham & cheddar with housemade chips for $5.95.

June 6th: Rad Reptile Night
Featuring our tortoises, reptiles and caiman.  Celebrate World Ocean’s Day and wear blue for a free ocean themed face painting. Underwater Photography Tip and Tricks from Underwater with Desert Divers who are providing the evening’s door prize of Snorkeling Classes fro Two.  Music by Adara Rae, a local singer/songwriter with a pop/country feel. At just 18 years of age she has recently signed with Burning House Records out of San Francisco, played in multiple local festivals and events as well as the world-renowned South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin, Texas. With her career just kicking off, come down and support Adara Rae as she begins her journey into the music world.  Visit RPZ’s Climate Change table with free lightbulbs (while supplies last).  TMC will be talking about bug safety with finger puppets. Zoofari Market Special:  Two fish tacos with rice and beans for $5.95. Lots going on at Reid Park including Cox Movies in the Park which begins at dusk near Demeester Performing Arts Pavilion. Tonight’s movie: Adventures of Rin Tin Tin.

June 13th:  Beautiful Birds
Featuring our aviaries and our collection of birds from around the world.  Father’s Day Appreciation Night – dads are free with a paid child admission. Music by The Intervals and Kristie Cunningham.  Car show by Sophisticated Few and Old Memories.  Tucson Medical Center will be handing out booster seats for children 5 years or older, weighing at least 40 pounds (while quantities last).  Zoofari Cafe Special:  Grilled chicken with guacamole, fresh tomato and bacon with housemade chips for $5.95.

June 20th: Positively Pachyderm Night
Featuring our elephants and rhinos.  Music by Bad News Blues.  Meet our elephant family and their keepers.  Watch a training demonstration, elephant swim and the family enjoying some frozen treats.  Visit an artifact station at rhino and learn about another Pachyderm.  Make elephant headbands with our Title Sponsor, TMC, and learn about safe sleeping.  Lots going on at Reid Park including Cox Movies in the Park which begins at dusk near Demeester Performing Arts Pavilion. Tonight’s movie: We Bought a Zoo.

June 27th: Big Cat Night
Featuring our lions, tigers and jaguars. Learn about big cats in southern Arizona with the U of A Jaguar Survey & Monitoring Project and Saguaro National Park.  Music provided by Tommy Tucker and “The String Bean Folk Orchestra – a unique ensemble comprised of local musicians who have come together to perform folk tunes and songs arranged for a large ensemble. Performing on fiddles, mandolins, bass, harp, clarinet, and whistle, we showcase a wide variety of folk traditions including American fiddle tunes, Irish, Mariachi, Cajun, Klezmer, and more! More fun than you can imagine.  Zoofari Market Special:  BBQ ribs, southwest coleslaw and macaroni & cheese for $7.95.

July 4th:  Uniquely Ungulates Night

Featuring our hooved mammals – giraffes, zebras, warty pigs, tapirs, & more. Come celebrate 4th of July at the Zoo before heading downtown to watch the fireworks. We’ve got 6 keeper chats featuring llama/guanaco, tapir, giraffe, zebra, Speke’s gazelle, and rhino.  There will also be a warty pig training demonstration.  Build-a-Bear will be here with zebras that you can “build.”  Learn about our southern Arizona ungulate, the javelina, with Saguaro National Park.  Sign up to win our door prize:  horseback riding lessons with Ashbrook Farms.  Music provided by The Just Intervals. Zoofari Cafe Special:  American bratwurst with peppers and onions, bourbon baked beans & homemade potato salad:  $6.95.   Please note there will NOT be live music tonight.
